About.

Gemma Bass is a violinist, composer, improviser and project leader based in Manchester UK. She is a member of JollyBassJones, Manchester Camerata and the BBC Philharmonic and is Project Leader at Special Virtuosi.

She is passionate about free, exploratory and performer-led music-making, particularly in a small-group setting. Her first two albums, ‘Missing Pieces | part 1 (me)’ and ‘Missing Pieces | part 2 (us)’ are out now on efpi records.

Also interested in music as a therapeutic and educative tool, Gemma regularly leads and assists on learning and community projects. She teaches the violin at the University of Manchester and freelances with Royal Northern Sinfonia, Manchester Collective, Manchester Baroque and other chamber ensembles across the UK.

Recent highlights include Aurora’s Beethoven 9 from memory at the BBC Proms, Manchester Camerata’s performance of her own work (Missing Pieces) and chamber music collaborations with Gwilym Simcock, Simon Knighton and Efpi All Stars.

“Gemma’s exploratory, thorough and thoughtful artistic practice is concerned with music as a communicative, shared phenomenon.” Tullis Rennie, composer
